SUMMARY:Exhibition - Withy Lore
DESCRIPTION:Withy Lore explores the endangered craft of withy pot making\, celebrating its heritage and community of makers through story\, art and film. \nUntil the 1960’s and 1970’s willow crab/lobster pots\, known locally as withy pots\, were a common sight around the South West coastline. Crafted with great skill over the winter months and cast into the sea with the hope of a good catch\, these pots were a lifeline to fishermen and their families for generations. With the introduction of plastic pots\, withy pot making rapidly declined and today few pot makers remain. Pot styles/techniques vary from place to place\, person to person\, like a signature. In turn these signatures reveal stories about place and community. As pots generally lasted 1 season\, and most makers didn’t document their process\, many designs have already been lost. Withy pot making is now \,classified as ‘critically endangered’ on the Red List of Endangered Crafts\, meaning it is at serious risk of no longer being practised in the UK. There is therefore an urgency to document and support this fascinating craft and its heritage\, which is deeply connected to our relationship with the natural world.

SUMMARY:Festival: Helston Makes It!
DESCRIPTION:  \nA programme of events in September \nHelston Makes It! is an annual celebration of craft\, both traditional and contemporary. It brings together a wide range of highly skilled makers to demonstrate their skills\, give talks and run workshops at the Museum of Cornish Life. \nMost of us leading busy lives\, and taking time out to learn a craft – or watching an expert maker at work – is both energising and relaxing. We’re at last appreciating practical skills that have been undervalued for so many years. \nThis year there is a link to the Withy Lore exhibition at the museum with many of the events during the week focussing on working with willow in all its forms. \nHelston Makes It! runs from 20th – 27th September 2025. To find out more and get involved look on the Museum of Cornish Life website’s What’s On page or pop into the museum in September to pick up a programme. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Nature Recovery in Cornwall
DESCRIPTION:On a single day in summer\, one acre of wildflower meadow can contain 3 million flowers\, producing 1kg of nectar sugar. That’s enough to support nearly 96\,000 honeybees per day. \n97% of species-rich grassland has been lost in the UK since the 1930s\, with the remaining 3% mostly fragmented across the country\, leaving little room for wildlife to spread. \nExplore how the National Trust and partners are tackling these issues\, through the Coastal Meadows project and the Lizard Rarities Project\, in this photography exhibition.

SUMMARY:Clay Monster: Queer Ta(i/e)ls (tails/tales)
DESCRIPTION:A free workshop for the LGBTQIA+ community led by artist\, Frankie Fisk “Play* ( *engage in activity for enjoyment rather than practical purpose ). Because our world needs\, softer\, wilder futures. Because monsters have birthdays too.” ~ Workshop facilitator Frankie Fisk Clay Monster: Queer Ta(i/e)ls (tails/tales) is a playful\, hands-in-the- ‘mud’ workshop where we’ll each sculpt a clay ‘monster’ and co-create a queer narrative. Blending clay play with child like storytelling methods\, the session invites collective myth-making\, and the imagining of otherwise worlds. We’ll draw on monster theory and queer ways of imagining to celebrate difference\, mess\, and things that don’t quite fit. \n \nOur monsters will then come together in the middle of our circle and be read the story we have written. \n \nAfter the workshop\, your monsters will be fired and glazed — ready to take home as tender companions. \n \nNo experience needed — just a willingness to play and explore the speculative magic of ta(i/e)l-making \n \nThis event is supporting our ambition to become a safer space for the LGBTQIA+ community 🏳️‍🌈 \n \nAt Trevow Helston\, we’re developing an evolving Actively Safe Space Manifesto for our venue that we hope will serve as a blueprint for other venues locally and nationally. This workshop will help us understand what our manifesto needs to include to work towards creating a safer space for the LGBTQIA+ community. \n \nThis event is made possible through the Cornwall Community Foundation and People In Mind Fund.
