SUMMARY:Exhibition - Withy Lore
DESCRIPTION:Withy Lore explores the endangered craft of withy pot making\, celebrating its heritage and community of makers through story\, art and film. \nUntil the 1960’s and 1970’s willow crab/lobster pots\, known locally as withy pots\, were a common sight around the South West coastline. Crafted with great skill over the winter months and cast into the sea with the hope of a good catch\, these pots were a lifeline to fishermen and their families for generations. With the introduction of plastic pots\, withy pot making rapidly declined and today few pot makers remain. Pot styles/techniques vary from place to place\, person to person\, like a signature. In turn these signatures reveal stories about place and community. As pots generally lasted 1 season\, and most makers didn’t document their process\, many designs have already been lost. Withy pot making is now \,classified as ‘critically endangered’ on the Red List of Endangered Crafts\, meaning it is at serious risk of no longer being practised in the UK. There is therefore an urgency to document and support this fascinating craft and its heritage\, which is deeply connected to our relationship with the natural world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Nature Recovery in Cornwall
DESCRIPTION:On a single day in summer\, one acre of wildflower meadow can contain 3 million flowers\, producing 1kg of nectar sugar. That’s enough to support nearly 96\,000 honeybees per day. \n97% of species-rich grassland has been lost in the UK since the 1930s\, with the remaining 3% mostly fragmented across the country\, leaving little room for wildlife to spread. \nExplore how the National Trust and partners are tackling these issues\, through the Coastal Meadows project and the Lizard Rarities Project\, in this photography exhibition.

SUMMARY:Helston and 'The Battle of the Styles'
DESCRIPTION:Architectural historian and author Dr Julian Holder delves into the debate about architectural styles that raged in London in the middle of the nineteenth century and brings it home to Helston. The battle between Classical and Gothic architectural styles that centred on the design of the new Foreign Office building in Whitehall involved architects and politicians – including the Prime Minister – and was also played out in Helston’s major nineteenth-century buildings\, the Grylls Monument and the Guildhall. Julian Holder will explore these histories in his illustrated talk and will lead a walk on the morning of Saturday 11 October. Booking is required for both events. \nOrganised in association with Helston Place Shaping Board. \nThursday 9 October\nCAST Café supper from 6pm\nTickets £15\, booking essential – – https://checkout.square.site/merchant/MLNDXB8E61SVC/checkout/2CVX55ZKBC5PGVX7GIRRFFAC?fbclid=IwY2xjawNLIK5leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETA4UTlIeHQ0OWZyVXQ2S2dsAR672koaG4XDJWMMm0Oe9uSSGFaSri6Dv5alMPwKIXMmgL4WTQtMVkPL_MEIAw_aem_TT6zIRy0ZlzkiUTsv9aarQ \nImage: The Grylls Monument\, R. SUMMARY:An Evening with Katrina Naomi
DESCRIPTION:Katrina’s new collection of poetry dance as if comes out on 25 September with Verve Poetry\, and we are honoured to celebrating its launch at The Bookshop!   This collection of dance-related poems evolved following a collaboration with dancer/choreographer Kyra Norman. \nJoelle Taylor says: ‘dance as if is a glorious rediscovery of body\, a radical relearning of the skin and bones of us\, of how we move through the world. It’s a book about learning to dance against sound\, a choreography that all women must learn\, and the difficult dance of life. The poetry is sinuous\, alive and in constant movement.’ \nTishani Doshi calls dance as if: ‘exuberant and celebratory‘. \nCome and celebrate dance as if at The Bookshop!

SUMMARY:Sad Ballads & Crazy Salads
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n\n\n\nSad Ballads & Crazy Salads with Elaine Claxton & Rick Williams \nA night of miserable music and (not so) wise words with Rick and Elaine… Rick and Elaine think they met about 18 years ago and since then\, along with Rick’s brother Grev\, they have become friends and have sung together at various traditional music sessions in West Penwith and Bodmin folk club. It’s something of a standing joke that the songs are largely about drownings\, murder\, unrequited love\, grinding poverty and other such cheerful subjects. \n \nSo when Rick and Elaine decided to put together and evening of music and readings\, “Sad Ballads” came to mind. The “Crazy Salads” part of the title is a quote from a poem by Yeats\, commenting on the odd choices some “fine women” make. So the show will be a mixture of mainly sad songs\, and very varied selction of readings by or about women who have made choices out of the ordinary. Some wiser than others.
