SUMMARY:Exhibition - Withy Lore
DESCRIPTION:Withy Lore explores the endangered craft of withy pot making\, celebrating its heritage and community of makers through story\, art and film. \nUntil the 1960’s and 1970’s willow crab/lobster pots\, known locally as withy pots\, were a common sight around the South West coastline. Crafted with great skill over the winter months and cast into the sea with the hope of a good catch\, these pots were a lifeline to fishermen and their families for generations. With the introduction of plastic pots\, withy pot making rapidly declined and today few pot makers remain. Pot styles/techniques vary from place to place\, person to person\, like a signature. In turn these signatures reveal stories about place and community. As pots generally lasted 1 season\, and most makers didn’t document their process\, many designs have already been lost. Withy pot making is now \,classified as ‘critically endangered’ on the Red List of Endangered Crafts\, meaning it is at serious risk of no longer being practised in the UK. There is therefore an urgency to document and support this fascinating craft and its heritage\, which is deeply connected to our relationship with the natural world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Nature Recovery in Cornwall
DESCRIPTION:On a single day in summer\, one acre of wildflower meadow can contain 3 million flowers\, producing 1kg of nectar sugar. That’s enough to support nearly 96\,000 honeybees per day. \n97% of species-rich grassland has been lost in the UK since the 1930s\, with the remaining 3% mostly fragmented across the country\, leaving little room for wildlife to spread. \nExplore how the National Trust and partners are tackling these issues\, through the Coastal Meadows project and the Lizard Rarities Project\, in this photography exhibition.

SUMMARY:William Wegman and Man Ray
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition brings together a selection of William Wegman’s wryly comedic single-take video works\, shot between 1972 and 1973\, with two longer works. Man Ray\, Man Ray\, 1978\, is a parody documentary in which the narrative slides humorously between biographical details relating to the Dada and Surrealist artist Man Ray and those belonging to Man Ray\, Wegman’s camera-loving Weimaraner dog. Around the Park\, 2007\, offers a deadpan observation of a full cast of Weimaraners taking on the roles of regular park goers and workers in Madison Square Park\, New York.\nIn his short films\, Wegman guides the viewer to look intently at the simplest actions and objects\, making often humorous connections that invite us to think differently about things. It is therefore unsurprising that\, as well as gallery works\, Wegman also produced segments for the popular children’s television show Sesame Street and has produced a number of children’s books\, some of which will be available to enjoy at CAST Café during the exhibition. \n15 October to 20 December\nWednesday to Friday\, 10am – 4pm\nSaturday\, 10am – 8pm\nFree admission\, all welcome \nVideo still\, Man Ray\, Man Ray\, 1978\, 5:23 minutes © William Wegman. SUMMARY:Artist's Choice | The Big Sea
DESCRIPTION:The Big Sea is an exploration of the human and environmental costs of neoprene production in ‘Cancer Alley’\, Louisiana. Neoprene is a material often used to make wetsuits and the film uses the lens of surfing to expose issues of greenwashing\, social justice and environmental racism\, and to explore the power individuals have to create change. \nArtist Andy Hughes\, will introduce the film. Hughes learnt to surf in the late 1980s while studying Fine Art at Cardiff University. Inspired by waves and water\, he has developed a practice focused on the nature of plastic waste and the ‘littoral zone’ – the area where land meets the sea. As part of his introduction\, he will share two of his own short video works. \nThursday 30 October\nCAST Café supper from 6pm\nTickets £15\, booking essential: https://checkout.square.site/merchant/MLNDXB8E61SVC/checkout/LSYEM5DNVRXHIRXW2CHB3MBI \n Film still The Big Sea (2024)\, Lewis Arnold. SUMMARY:An Evening with Elizabeth Dale
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Dale is NOT a historian!  But she IS a  writer with a love of history\, a brilliant gatherer of information and conveyor of tales\, which you will know if you follow her blog\, cornishbirdblog.com. \nJoin us as Elizabeth shares stories from her first book\, of the forgotten burial places in Cornwall\, people who were  shunned in death by the church and their communities\, or who chose\, for their own reasons\, to be buried apart. It explores the superstitions behind and the traditions of crossroads burials and our ancestors’ obsessions with death and dying.
