SUMMARY:Huw Wahl and Rose Ravetz Talk and Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:For this special evening screening Huw Wahl will be joined in conversation by his sister Rose Ravetz who introduced him to sailing on her Falmouth quay punt Defiance. This experience produced the first shoots of Huw’s project Wind\, Tide & Oar\, which grew into a sibling collaboration of multiple proportions. \nJude Brickhill\, skipper of Guide Me\, will also contribute to the event\, with a description of a challenging passage around the Lizard\, setting off from the Helford River to participate in the Sea Salts and Sail festival in Mousehole. \nUsing a 1960s hand-wound camera\, Huw Wahl shot Wind\, Tide & Oar over a three year period. In that time he followed a diverse array of traditional boats and the people who sail them as they journey through rivers\, coastlines\, and open seas. \nThe film offers a poetic perspective that uncovers the unique rhythms and motivations of engineless navigation and invites deep reflection on our relationship with the natural world. There are free daily screenings at CAST from 2 July to 10 August – find out more. \nHuw Wahl is a filmmaker and artist who has earned international recognition and showcased his award-winning work globally. He uses analogue film to explore the transformative potential of creative action. His last film The Republics (2020)\, made in collaboration with the poet Stephen Watts was shown at CAST in 2021. \nRose Ravetz‘s frst sailing experience was crossing the Atlantic Ocean at age nineteen. Having left home with a dream to travel she spent four years on various ocean crossings and adventures\, eventually reaching New Zealand\, from where she then sailed back to Europe as a professional crew on the famous classic schooner Atlantic. Since her return\, she has worked professionally for sail-cargo initiatives and sail-training charities\, and as a traditional rigger on museum ships\, including the Cutty Sark and HMS Gannet. She owns her 23ft engineless boat Defiance\, which she restored.

Walk\, jog\, run\, volunteer or spectate – it’s up to you! \n\n\n\nWhen is it?\n\n\n\nEvery Saturday at 9:00am. \n\n\n\nWhere is it?\n\n\n\nThe event takes place at Penrose Estate\, Porthleven Road\, Helston\, Cornwall TR13 0RA. See Course page for more details. \n\n\n\nWhat does it cost to join in?\n\n\n\nNothing – it’s free! but please register before you first come along. Only ever register with parkrun once and don’t forget to bring a scannable copy of your barcode (request a reminder). If you forget it\, you won’t get a time. \n\n\n\nHow fast do I have to be?\n\n\n\nWe all take part for our own enjoyment. DESCRIPTION:Thursday 4 July at 7.30pm Join us for an evening with award-winning and Booker-nominated Wyl Menmuir\, introducing his new book The Heart of the Woods An award-winning author based in Cornwall\, Wyl’s debut novel\, The Many (2016) was nominated for the Man-Booker Award and was an Observer Best Fiction of the year pick. Wyl is co-creator of the Cornish writing centre\, The Writers’ Block and lectures in creative writing at Falmouth University. About the book Just as a parent leaves a legacy to their child\, a tree leaves a legacy to its surroundings. A deep and explorative companion piece to the Roger Deakin Award-winning The Draw of The Sea (2023). Wyl travelled throughout Britain and Ireland to meet the people who plant trees\, the ecologists who study them\, those who shape beautiful objects and tools from wood\, and those who use them to help others\, to better understand the woods they know so well\, the joys and frustrations of working with a living material\, and the stories of their craft and skills.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Wind\, Tide & Oar
DESCRIPTION:Using a 1960s hand-wound camera\, Huw Wahl shot Wind\, Tide & Oar over a three-year period. In that time he followed a diverse array of traditional boats and the people who sail them as they journey through rivers\, along coastlines and across open seas. \nThe film offers a poetic perspective that uncovers the unique rhythms and motivations of engineless navigation and invites deep reflection on our relationship with the natural world. \nHuw Wahl was introduced to sailing by his sister Rose Ravetz\, on her Falmouth quay punt Defiance. This experience produced the first shoots of the project\, which grew into a sibling collaboration of multiple proportions. Rose Ravetz will join her brother for a special evening screening and talk on 11 July – read more. \nWahl also worked closely with sailors in Cornwall\, including Jude and Jonno Brickhill\, whose boat Guide Me features prominently in the film\, Giles Gilbert\, whose boat Dorothy is based on the lines of an original St Michael’s Mount post boat\, and Jonathan Bailey\, who fishes for oysters in Falmouth Harbour from his 23ft gaff-rigged cutter Katrina. \nMaking this film has taught me so much about what it means to sail engineless\, but also a huge amount about filmmaking. Both are deeply rooted – during their best moments – in feeling. Whether that’s intuiting the right time to tack or the right time to press the shutter\, each requires the practitioner to enter a trance-like state of concentration\, deeply connected to their surroundings\, almost instinctive in their reactions. If we can learn something from the sailor\, it’s that response is the key to our navigation in the broadest sense. \n– Huw Wahl\, Director \nThe presentation of the film at CAST will include additional footage from the making of Wind\, Tide & Oar\, with a focus on some of the land-based workmanship that is essential to the maintenance and production of traditional boats. \nHuw Wahl is a filmmaker and artist who has won international recognition and showcased his award-winning work globally. He uses analogue film to explore the transformative potential of creative action. SUMMARY:Film: Boy Bird Monkey Rose by Margaret Salmon
DESCRIPTION:Margaret Salmon creates intense and beautiful filmic portraits that focus on the minutiae of the everyday. Her close observations of human behaviour\, plants and animals are both ethnographic and poetic in nature. She shoots all her work on photo-chemical film\, drawing techniques from various cinematic traditions to create her own formal compositions. \nboy bird monkey rose brings together a selection of five works\, spanning thirteen years of Salmon’s practice: The Enemies of the Rose (2010)\, a luscious observation of interactions between garden flora and insect life\, Gibraltar (2013)\, which follows the interactions of monkeys and human visitors\, Bird (2016)\, a riff on the instructional nature documentary work of film pioneer Mary Field\, Boy (winter) (2022)\, a series of encounters with contemporary boyhood\, and Parolanto (2023)\, in which children illustrate phrases written in the constructed universal language of Esperanto. \nMargaret Salmon’s work has been exhibited widely including at the 9th Yokohama Triennial (2024)\, the British Art Show 8 (2022-2023) and the Venice Biennale (2007).
