DESCRIPTION:Wild Spaces with Doug Allan\n\n\nHelston Old Cemetery Chapel\n\n\n7.30pm 3rd September 2024\n\n\n​ \n“Wildlife cameramen don’t come much more special than Doug Allan”~ Sir David Attenborough \n\n\nBook now\n\n\nThis event is being hosted in partnership with Helston Climate Action Group\, Wildlife Groundswell\, XR Helston and Plastic Free Helston. \n​ \nMulti-Emmy and BAFTA award-winning Blue Planet and Planet Earth cameraman\, Doug Allan will join us in Helston for an evening of behind-the-scenes stories and honest conversation about climate reality and optimism. From mountain summits to rocky shorelines\, through coral reefs and kelp forests\, from arid deserts to the frigid poles\, under the shifting sea ice of the frozen oceans Wild Spaces is a journey to inspire all who love wilderness. It’s a celebration of the breathtaking range of environments that Doug Allan has been privileged to film over his 40 years as a documentary cameraman and photographer.  \n\n\n\n\n\nDoug Allan diving in Chagos \n\n\nClimate change means familiar landscapes are disappearing across the world. Wild places are under threat – how should we be changing to protect them? \n​ \nIllustrated with his own photographs and clips from his best-known series\, and with a wealth of behind the scenes stories\, Doug’s presentation at the Helston Chapel will cover successes and setbacks during his own personal experiences exploring the challenges of climate change. \n​ \n“I’ve learned to balance climate reality with climate optimism and most importantly\, to realise that when everyone works together we can inspire a change of direction.” \n~ Doug Allan \n\n\n\n\n\nEmperor Penguins with chicks\, captured by Doug Allan \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Doug Allan​\n\nDoug spent eight years in Antarctica as a research diver\, scientist and photographer for the British Antarctic Survey\, before changing direction to full-time filming in 1984. \n\nHe specialises in natural history\, expeditions and science documentaries in some of the wildest and most remote places on our planet\, particularly the polar zones. He has filmed for many series including The Blue Planet\, Planet Earth\, Life\, Human Planet\, Frozen Planet\, Forces of Nature\, Ocean Giants and Operation Iceberg\, as well as making programmes for the Living Oceans Foundation about coral reef conservation and overfishing. \n​ \nHis photographic awards include eight Emmy’s and five BAFTA’s. He has three Honorary Doctorates in recognition of his camerawork\, as well as two Polar Medals. He’s an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and of the Royal Photographic Society. To enter the ticket draw please click here.  \n\n\nWhat do I need to know?\n​ \nThis event will take place at the Helston Old Cemetery Chapel\, Meneage Road\, Helston\, TR13 8BH. \n\nThere is a large pay and display car park opposite the Helston Medical Centre\, Trelawney Rd\, Helston TR13 8AU. This is a 5-10 minute walk away. It is possible to drop-off and pick-up immediately outside the chapel building. \n​ \nThere is level access from the tarmac path into the side door of the chapel. There is space inside the chapel for wheelchairs. The seating will be on pews. If we can support you at our event in other ways please contact us on guy@cousinjacks.org \n​ \nThis event will be structured as follows: 50 minute presentation\, 20 minute “in conversation with” + 20 minute Q&A with audience. \n​ \nThe event is suitable for all ages. \n\nA small pop-up bar will be available at this event. DESCRIPTION:Archaeologist Charles Johns talks about discoveries made at the site of Kynance Gate one of the ‘lost’ sites of Cornish archaeology. In the early 1950s a schoolboy found some pottery there. This led Headmaster\, Ivor Thomas\, from Landwednack School to carry out excavations between 1953 and 1963. Charlie will share his knowledge about this nationally important settlement with Bronze Age\, Iron Age and Romano-British finds.

Well\, if anybody can\, Squashbox Theatre can! \nJoin intrepid explorer Craig on a breathless race across the world\, as he attempts to decipher an ancient mystery – a mystery that could hold the key to our planet’s survival! \nIn Wonderful World we will traverse the globe\, visiting different countries\, encountering strange and wonderful creatures\, meeting crazy characters\, and learning incredible facts about planet Earth along the way. \nWonderful World is a brand-new show from Squashbox Theatre\, incorporating ingenious puppetry\, fantastic facts\, silly slapstick\, crazy comedy and marvellous live music – all presented in that unique Squashbox style! \nWonderful World – unmissable fun for children and adults of all ages! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat do I need to know?\n\nThis is a free event and no booking is required.\nThe run time is approximately 50 minutes.\nPlease bring your own chairs and/or blankets for this event. Seating is not provided.\nThis open-air event takes place in Events Square\, directly outside Lakeside Cafe at Coronation Park\, Helston\, TR13 0RA.\nOutdoor events will only be cancelled in extreme weather conditions\, so please bring a coat (but not an umbrella as it blocks the view of other audience members).\nThere is a small pay and display car park at Coronation Park as well as a larger car park at Castle Green. Free parking is available at the nearby Fairground car park.\nThere is level access to Coronation Park and Events Square. If you have any additional access needs that you’d like to discuss with us please email Guy on guy@cousinjacks.org.\nThere are accessible toilets at the rear of Lakeside Cafe.\nUnfortunately\, dogs are not permitted at ticketed events.
