DESCRIPTION:About the event\n\n\n\nSad Ballads & Crazy Salads with Elaine Claxton & Rick Williams  \nA night of miserable music and (not so) wise words with Rick and Elaine… Rick and Elaine think they met about 18 years ago and since then\, along with Rick’s brother Grev\, they have become friends and have sung together at various traditional music sessions in West Penwith and Bodmin folk club. It’s something of a standing joke that the songs are largely about drownings\, murder\, unrequited love\, grinding poverty and other such cheerful subjects. \n \nSo when Rick and Elaine decided to put together and evening of music and readings\, “Sad Ballads” came to mind. The “Crazy Salads” part of the title is a quote from a poem by Yeats\, commenting on the odd choices some “fine women” make. So the show will be a mixture of mainly sad songs\, and very varied selction of readings by or about women who have made choices out of the ordinary. Some wiser than others.

DESCRIPTION:Architectural historian and author Dr Julian Holder delves into the debate about architectural styles that raged in London in the middle of the nineteenth century and brings it home to Helston. The battle between Classical and Gothic architectural styles that centred on the design of the new Foreign Office building in Whitehall involved architects and politicians – including the Prime Minister – and was also played out in Helston’s major nineteenth-century buildings\, the Grylls Monument and the Guildhall. Julian Holder will explore these histories in his illustrated talk and will lead a walk on the morning of Saturday 11 October. Callbacks\, if needed\, will be on Wednesday 29th October \nThe play highlights the mass hysteria between Salem in 1692 and McCarthyism in America during the 1950s. It’s a gritty play all about mistrust and misuse of power systems. In this play\, we will explore how people were stirred into madness\, paranoia and malice – the power of a false accusation during the times of the Salem Witch Trials. \nThe evening will be a chance to learn more information about the play\, starting with a small presentation about the play\, characters and vision and then a full readthrough. \nThere are parts for all ages\, but not for those Under 16. \nIf you require further information prior to the launch please contact Alex (ouldy1999@gmail.com)\, or Paul\, our Chairman.
