SUMMARY:BEING JOHN SMITH
DESCRIPTION:A deceptively wry and deeply felt work by the English avant-garde legend- Jesse Cumming\, Toronto International Film Festival \nAfter enduring many decades of embarrassment and discomfort\, the artist John Smith finally admits to the negative impact that the commonest name in the English-speaking world has had on his psyche. Peppered with disparate fragments of autobiography\, Being John Smith (2024) takes us on a confessional journey that reveals just how important a name can be. \nBorn in 1952 in Walthamstow\, Smith has won international renown for his quietly humorous work\, which often plays with the viewer’s narrative expectations\, and involves subtle political critique.\n14 May – 21 June\nOpen Wednesday to Saturday\, 10am to 4pm\nSaturday screenings continue until 8pm (except 24 May)\nScreenings begin on the hour and half hour\nFree\, all welcome \nJohn Smith will give a talk at CAST on Thursday 12 June\, preceded by a CAST Café supper from 6pm. Tickets are available now. \nFilm still John Smith Being John Smith\, 2024. HD Video\, 27 minutes © John Smith. Image courtesy the artist and Kate MacGarry Gallery.

SUMMARY:Man Down Helston
DESCRIPTION:What is Man Down ??\nWe are here to help reduce the number of male suicides and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health by offering men the space to talk about their emotions. The main way we do this is by facilitating free-to-attend fortnightly informal talking group meetings held at locations all over the UK.\n\nWhat happens at Man Down Helston ??\nEvery two weeks on a Tuesday at 7pm we invite men to come along and talk about their mental health as part of a supportive talking group. By offering the chance to speak and listening to others\, together we break down the stigma associated with talking about our emotions. All attending agree to the sessions being a confidential\, non-judgemental and safe space to share. We also offer social meet ups and an online peer support group for those that have attended a face-to-face talking group meeting.

SUMMARY:Macbeth
DESCRIPTION:by Duke’s Theatre Company\nWednesday 11th June at 7pm\nThe Dukes Theatre Company’s production of Macbeth offers a dynamic reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy. Known for their bold and innovative interpretations\, the company brings a contemporary edge to the dark tale of ambition\, murder\, and madness. \nDirector Robert Shaw Cameron (Coronation Street\, Regents Park Open Air Theatre\, Sheffield Crucible) and designer Jessica Curtis (Hampstead Theatre\, Almeida Theatre\, Royal National Theatre) make a production with a cast of six industry-leading actors. With a strong focus on the psychological unravelling of the protagonists\, this adaptation takes The Duke’s into a new era of open-air Summer touring.

SUMMARY:The Green Knight but Gay
DESCRIPTION:Join award winning and critically acclaimed storyteller Niall Moorjani for their fantastical\, queer and hilarious take on the medieval classic The Green Knight. It’s a version in which they make sub text-text! We’ll give you a clue\, it’s gay. \n \nFollow the story of Sir Gawain and his adventures\, all started by the peer-pressured\, unfortunate and unsuccessful chopping off of The Green Knight’s head. Now Gawain is going to get his head chopped off in return by the miraculously still alive green knight. Disaster. King Arthur reckons this will be grand as Gawain needs to do more manly things anyway and there is nothing more manly than taking a good head chop off. The Green Knight But It’s Gay brings this Arthurian classic excellently brought into the modern world with deep love for the original text.

SUMMARY:John Smith | Artist's Talk
DESCRIPTION:Renowned artist filmmaker John Smith will visit CAST to speak about his work. Smith’s new work Being John Smith is on show at CAST from 12 May to 21 June\, and will screen until 7pm on the evening of the talk. Smith will also share some of his other works as part of the evening. \nIn Being John Smith\, 2024\, (27mins) the artist reflects on the ordinariness of his name and its profound impact on his sense of self. Through a mix of humour and melancholic self-reflection\, Smith navigates his lower middle class roots and his rise to prominence as an influential avant-garde filmmaker. But Smith also uses the autobiographical focus of the film to address issues that affect us all\, offering poignant reflections on the human condition\, the state of the world and the passage of time. \nJohn Smith was born in Walthamstow\, London in 1952 and lives and works in London. He studied at North-East London Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art\, after which he became an active member of the London Filmmakers Co-op. Inspired by conceptual art\, structural film\, and the immersive power of narrative and the spoken word\, Smith has developed an extensive body of work that subverts the boundaries between documentary and fiction\, representation and abstraction. Often rooted in everyday life\, his meticulously crafted films examine and expose the language of cinema itself. \nThursday 12 June\nCAST Café supper from 6pm\nTalk from 7.15pm\nTickets from £15\, booking essential \nFilm still John Smith Being John Smith\, 2024. HD Video\, 27 minutes © John Smith.
