SUMMARY:The Hooligan Project Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Liubov Sliusareva’s 25-minute documentary The Hooligan Project follows Ukrainian theatre group Hooligan Art Community as they work with young artists in Cornwall following their displacement to the UK by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. \nCommissioned by The Ladder for the Harbour Festival in September 2024\, Hooligan Art Community developed an original piece of music-theatre with local 18-35 year olds at The Pearl Exchange in Bude\, in response to the story of actor Simeon ‘Sam’ Kyslyi’s teenage years as a football hooligan. (Sam used to fight in brutal competitions against rival football supporters in the east of Ukraine\, while at the same time studying to be an actor\, covering his bruises with make-up before going on stage.)\nThe screening of the film will be followed by a discussion with Peter Cant\, Artistic Director of Hooligan Art Community\, Fliss Loxley\, Managing Director of The Pearl Exchange\, filmmaker Liubov Sliusareva\, and participants involved in the project. It will open up a dialogue around how organisations and artists bring contemporary arts practices to communities\, looking at the way in which The Hooligan Project bridges the gaps between participation\, access and aspiration. \nFriday 28 February\, 6pm\nTickets £5\, booking essential – https://checkout.square.site/merchant/MLNDXB8E61SVC/checkout/IDVHKW2VYS7OLS3BOFGE364T\nAll money will go to Hooligan Art Community \nWe would like to thank Helston CIC whose support has made it possible for Liubov Sliusareva to attend. \nHooligan Art Community performing in Harbour Festival at The Ladder\, Redruth\, 2024.\nImage courtesy Liubov Sliusareva.

SUMMARY:PHILIP MARSDEN | UNDER A METAL SKY
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 27 February\nCAST Café Supper from 6pm\, followed by the talk\nTickets from £15\, booking essential \nPhilip Marsden’s new book\, Under a Metal Sky\, explores how the discovery of minerals has transformed our species. Beginning and ending in Cornwall\, the book follows his journey across Europe\, examining peat extraction in the Netherlands\, iron-rich meteorites along the Rhine\, and gold in the mountains of Georgia. Along the way\, Marsden reflects on the links between rocks and ecology\, between metals and the imagination\, presenting a new perspective on European history and on our complex relationship with the natural world.\nMarsden will be introduced by artist Hadrian Pigott and the evening will include readings from the book. Philip Marsden is an award-winning author of many works of travel writing and other non-fiction\, including The Summer Isles\, Rising Ground and The Levelling Sea. \nPenzance-based artist Hadrian Pigott trained as a geologist and worked on oil rigs before leaving the oil industry to study at the Royal College of Art\, graduating with an MA from the sculpture department in 1993. In 2012 he researched and developed The Penzance Convention\, reflecting on the theme of extraction. \nThe Bookshop in Helston will set up at CAST for the evening\, with copies of the book for sale and with space for book signing. \nImage: Geiger counter photographed by Hadrian Pigott near St Ives during preparations for The Penzance Convention\, 2012. ⓒ Hadrian Pigott\, 2012
