SUMMARY:Artist in Residence - Vicki Aimers
DESCRIPTION:The Mending Rehearsal: Margaret Lanyon – The Wendron Years\n\n\nVicki Aimers is a book artist\, and PhD researcher with Falmouth University. Her practice-based research explores the lives of young Cornish sampler makers and the teachers who taught them needlework\, through archival research\, narrative stitch\, artist books\, creative writing\, and community workshops. Through making and participation\, her work considers how textiles can hold traces of education\, memory\, care\, labour\, and lived experience\, offering insight into the often-overlooked histories of girls and women in Cornwall. \nDuring her residency at the Museum of Cornish Life\, Vicki will be creating new work in response to the museum’s sampler collection\, which spans from the mid eighteenth to the early twentieth century. Alongside this\, she will be researching the lives and stories connected to these historic textiles\, sharing the experiences of the pupils and teachers whose work survives within the county’s collections. \nA particular focus of her current project is a darning sampler sewn in 1879 by Margaret Lanyon (1861-1939)\, held in the collection of Cornwall Museum & Art Gallery. Through archival research\, Vicki has been tracing Margaret’s life from her early years in Gweek\, where her family worked within the maritime industry\, to her later life in the farming community of Wendron\, where she married the celebrated Cornish wrestler John “Jack” Pearce. These fragments of everyday life and labour\, form an important starting point for the residency and wider study.

SUMMARY:Screening - Manifesto
DESCRIPTION:Ane Hjort Guttu’s film Manifesto\, 2020\, (27 min) speculates on the aims and purposes of institutional art education. Newly migrated into a university and an open-plan campus building\, an art school feels cornered by a suffocating culture of surveillance and administration. Staff and students find ways to subvert control through secret operations. Drawing on her own experiences as an art teacher\, Ane Hjort Guttu explores what is lost when creativity is replaced by order and provides action plans for how to be the playful rebel. \nAne Hjort Guttu is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Oslo. She works across a range of media\, with a particular focus on text and moving images. Her practice explores the relationship between freedom and power\, how we navigate public space\, individual autonomy\, and the social\, economic\, and political conditions of art. \nFrom 13 to 20 March 2026 Ane Hjort Guttu will be leading the eighth Cornwall Workshop\, a weeklong intensive residential workshop for artists\, curators and writers based in Cornwall and the South West. The workshop is organised by CAST and hosted at Kestle Barton on the Lizard peninsula.

SUMMARY:Man Down Helston
DESCRIPTION:What is Man Down ??\nWe are here to help reduce the number of male suicides and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health by offering men the space to talk about their emotions. The main way we do this is by facilitating free-to-attend fortnightly informal talking group meetings held at locations all over the UK.\n\nWhat happens at Man Down Helston ??\nEvery two weeks on a Tuesday at 7pm we invite men to come along and talk about their mental health as part of a supportive talking group. By offering the chance to speak and listening to others\, together we break down the stigma associated with talking about our emotions. All attending agree to the sessions being a confidential\, non-judgemental and safe space to share. We also offer social meet ups and an online peer support group for those that have attended a face-to-face talking group meeting.

SUMMARY:Make a Dress Block
DESCRIPTION:The aim of the course is to come away with a well fitted dress block (a basic dress pattern with fitted bodice\, pencil skirt and fitted sleeve). Having your own block is so useful and essential for making new patterns at home. \nPlease note\, we will not be drafting the block from scratch\, we will be amending a block to fit you. We will start by taking measurements and amending the pattern where possible first. Then you will make a toile of the dress in calico to fit. You will have a couple of fittings\, as we refine the fit of the garment in stages. These fitting techniques can be applied to any dress/top pattern that you use in future!

SUMMARY:Make a Trouser Block
DESCRIPTION:The aim of the class is to come away with a well fitted trouser block. Having your own block is so useful and essential for making new patterns at home. We will be drafting the block from scratch from your measurements\, so please wear leggings so that we can get accurate measurements before we start. After we have drafted the block and added seam allowance\, we will make up a quick toile in calico to check the fit\, before making any adjustments on the pattern. Please note you will not have a finished pair of trousers to take home\, you will have a calico toile and pattern block. From your block you can then make pattern design alterations\, such as adding pockets\, adding a waistband or waist facing\, seam lines etc at home.

SUMMARY:Robin Ince: Bookshop and Library Tour
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning broadcaster\, author and comedian Robin Ince is returning to the Bookshop!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn evening to welcome Robin’s new collection of poems\, Let The Quiet Ones Rise – all about standing up and standing out. Mixing comedy and poetry with themes of activism\, loneliness and love this collection of poems and stories come from anger about the culture of power and abuse thought to the joy about Doctor Who and A Taste of Honey. \nAnd the much loved Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal is now out in paperback.  A powerful\, personal exploration of anxiety\, ADHD and neurodiversity\, this reminds us all – no matter how weird we feel – that it’s okay to be a little different. We all are. What if being a bit weird is actually entirely normal? What if sharing our internal struggles wasn’t a sign of weakness\, but strength? \nFor over thirty years\, Robin Ince has entertained thousands in person and on air. But underneath the surface\, a whirlwind was at play – a struggle with sadness\, concentration\, self-doubt and near-constant anxiety. But then he discovered he had all the hallmarks of ADHD and his stumbling blocks became stepping stones. \nIn Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal\, Robin uses his own experiences to explore the neurodivergent experience and to ask what the point of “being normal” really is. Packed with personal insights\, intimate anecdotes and interviews with psychologists\, neuroscientists and many neurodivergent people he has met along the way\, this is a quirky and witty dive into the world of human behaviour. \nThere are TWO events on the same night\, 5.30pm-6.30pm\, and 7pm-8pm.  Please double-check the time that you are booking for!
