The Well & Five Wells Lane
Once a cobbled service road leading to the rear of businesses and fine houses on Coinagehall and Cross Street, seek out this lane to be transported into Helston’s colourful past.
Make your way down cobbled steps to find a well that’s been here since at least 1703. It would once have been a vital meeting place for washing clothes and filling buckets with clear well water.
Across from the well are two cobbled alleys. Helston is full of these small ‘opes’. The one on the left is Wheelbarrow Lane with its additional sloped stones, added to help the barrow boys down to the well.
You can find out more about Helston’s history in the Museum of Cornish Life, Helston, just opposite the northerly entrance to Five Wells Lane.
