Exhibition: Helston 365

In 2015, the Museum of Cornish Life launched the “Helston 365” project in which anybody could become a exhibiting photographer. One photo for each day of the year were submitted by members of the public, collected together and put on display in an exhibition. Now ten years later, a new exhibition allows for some reflection on what has arrived, departed and remained in a changing world.
The project was the idea of Jude Carroll, a volunteer at the museum. She said about the project:
“I set myself a challenge to collect a photograph of our local area for each day of the year in 2015, in partnership with what was then known as Helston Folk Museum. This led me to persuade, cajole and nag until almost every date had somebody responsible to find a subject, take a photo and write a short piece about it. Ten years ago, when our phones were less sophisticated, most people used a camera and printed the images, rather than supplying them in digital form. In February 2016 they were exhibited in this room. I am delighted that the images and texts have been preserved and we can see where there have been changes in our community and landscape and what has remained pretty much as it was a decade ago.”
The Helston 365 project spanned across every area of Helstonian culture and lifestyle, from documenting performances by the Helston Theatre Company to the Porthleven nightlife. All manner of landmarks, citizens and public events were immortalised. A slice of Cornwall frozen in time.
