Merchant Navy Day

Helston Town Council invites you to join us at the Guildhall, Corn Exchange on Wednesday 3rd September as we honour and remember the sacrifices of merchant seafarers, and celebrate their ongoing contributions to the UK’s trade and economy.
The event will begin at 10.30am with tea, cake, and speeches, followed by a ceremonial flag flying at 11am. This tradition commemorates the historic event of 1939 when the first UK merchant ship, SS Athenia, was tragically torpedoed and sunk during World War II – claiming the lives of over 120 passengers and crew.
We especially encourage anyone with links to Merchant Navy personnel – past or present – to share this invitation and join us for this important day of remembrance.
This event is open to the public and all are welcome.
