Songs & stories with Boilerhouse & Annamaria Murphy

Friday 10 April @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
£11.00

An evening of a cappella singing and magical storytelling from celebrated Cornish artists. Expect beautiful harmonies, tall tales, working songs and poetry — a warm, generous night rooted in Cornwall.

Boilerhouse are a five-piece a cappella group from Penzance with a growing reputation for their generous and joyful shows. Deeply rooted in generations of Cornish singing traditions, they draw on folk songs, American Sacred Harp, gospel, and home-spun arrangements of Cornish poems — including the work of celebrated Launceston poet Charles Causley. With beautiful harmonies and infectious warmth, Boilerhouse put their passion and love of singing into every performance. They’ve appeared on the Voices of Cornwall compilation albums and have performed at venues across Cornwall including Penlee Park Theatre, Tremenheere Gallery and the Acorn Penzance.

Annamaria Murphy is a writer for BBC Radio 4 and, formerly, Kneehigh Theatre, and is currently collaborating with musicians Bagas Degol. Born in Polperro and now based in West Penwith, Anna creates magical tales that combine humour with insight, drawn from her long experience of writing stories, poetry and plays. Her credits include Tristan and Yseult, Red Shoes, Don John and The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings. She was lead artist on Kneehigh’s beloved Rambles programme — walking Cornwall’s lanes gathering stories and memories — and was Artistic Director of The Writers’ Block in Redruth for many years. Her collaborations with Bagas Degol include Salt Road, The Winding World and, new show which toured to the chapel in 2025, Exiles.
