Tinners’ Festival: Tin in Antiquity talk with Ben Sumpter
Tin in Antiquity: Deciphering the oldest Greek and Roman sources of Devon & Cornwall’s tin trade. The earliest literate travellers to the British Isles whose texts have survived frequently mention tinworking in connection with Devon & Cornwall. What can studying these texts tell us about the patterns of proto-historic tin trade under the Romans, during the Iron Age and potentially even earlier during the bronze age itself? What place did the British Isles (and Cornwall) play in the pan-European known world? Ben Sumpter is an expert on all aspects of Cornish mining, and manager of Sumpter Mining Services. Please book tickets via Eventbrite Arrive from 7.30pm with the talk due to begin around 7.45pm The Old Chapel is disabled friendly, and has a fully stocked bar!
