Helston Mayor Choosing

Each year Helston chooses a new mayor. It’s a traditional event, filled with pomp and ceremony, as the old mayor hands over to the new— and, like all town council meetings, it’s open to the public.

The outgoing Mayor gives thanks, and the new Mayor (already chosen by Councillors at a previous special Full Council Meeting) gives a speech outlining his/her plans for the forthcoming year and makes a formal declaration of acceptance of office.

The Mayor’s Mace-Bearers also make a formal undertaking to serve the Mayor to the best of their abilities over the year.

The Annual Meeting and Mayor Choosing Ceremony of Helston Town Council is held on the Tuesday before the Full Council Meeting for May in the Guildhall, Helston.

After the meeting has formally chosen the new Mayor for the following civic year, the meeting is adjourned until the Council Meeting on Thursday, which is the third Thursday of the month like all full Council Meetings. The new Mayor takes the chair and the Meeting proceeds in the usual way.
