A Meeting Place in the Centre of Town

One of the Place Shaping project teams is working on plans to re-instate the ope linking the Museum to CAST and Wendron Street, refurbishing the Drill Hall Yard and the area in front of the Museum to create a series of linked outdoor spaces for events, markets and community activities.

This ‘Cultural Quarter’ behind the Guildhall and including Church Street, the Museum, CAST and the areas linking these buildings, is at the heart of the original settlement of Helston, surrounded by architectural heritage. An attractive and enclosed space – one of the most historic settings in Cornwall. But it is in a state of disrepair with poor walking surfaces and most parts allocated to car parking and access.

We want to address the decline and refurbish the space as a public area – a place to visit, gather and enjoy in the centre of the town. A place which will attract people to the town centre and encourage them to dwell.

The Drill Hall Yard will be able to host a broad range of activities, markets, events and performances as well as being a sheltered outdoor place for meeting friends. The re-opening of the pedestrian link from the Drill Hall Yard alongside the Museum, with new steps to CAST and Wendron Street car park, will reinstate one of Helston’s hidden historic opes.

New, accessible toilets could be created in Bowden’s basement, which will allow the Guildhall toilets to be converted into a new public meeting space facing onto Market Place.

The project gained Planning Permission in November 2022 and the team are now applying for a number of funding opportunities to bring the plans to fruition.
